To your point on the Leafs misjudging JVRs trade value, I’m not sure I buy it. There had to have been more to the offer the Leafs (reportedly) gave for Hamonic. By more to it I mean coming the Leafs way, which is why NYI turned it down. We know Hamonic was traded for a 1st, and two 2nd round picks (and a 4th went back to Calgary). The reported offer from the Leafs was JVR and a 1st round pick. If that is true, JVR (+ a 4th) is only worth (approximately) two 2nd round picks in a trade? Hard to believe that’s all he could fetch, especially when teams will line up and give him 5-6 million per on a long term deal as a UFA. You don’t give term and money to a guy with no value. Maybe cap space, and wanting to move Hamonic out of the conference played a part, but if I am a GM I am taking the best offer, regardless of where my player is going. Why not take JVR and the 1st and then flip JVR for another 1st round pick? At 4.25 for the rest of the year, pretty reasonable for a contender to fit under the cap. I just can’t believe that Snow took the Flames offer if the Leafs actually offered JVR and 1st. Not to mention the Islanders are looking for more offence to prove to JT they are trying to build a winner quickly.

The Leafs were one of the best teams in the second half, and went toe to toe with the top seed. I wouldn't be surprised if they wait until the deadline, and if they are in a very good position they keep JVR go for it with offensive firepower and do what they can on D. If they lose JVR to UFA, (frank) it, can't go for it without some sacrifice. Marleau didn't come here because they said we're still rebuilding.

Lilybust sliding to 17 is the break that allows the Leafs to let JVR walk as a UFA and still have upgraded D going forward because they stole it in this draft.

Of course GM's will pay more for a UFA when they don't have to give up serious assets. JVR is getting into rental country, you can only get so much. You guys may as well use him & move him at the TDL, chances are you will be able to get a little more for a desperate GM on the bubble. Hamonic is signed for 3 more years at an amazing cap hit. That got the extra 2nd alone.

I would think that term its more of the problem than salary. JVR is worth $6 mil a year, but do you want to pay that when he is 35 years old and beyond. I'm not so sure.
